The Hustle is the acquisition that made "software company buys a newsletter" a repeatable play. Sam Parr launched it as a daily email in April 2016, two years after starting the Hustle Con conference, and when HubSpot announced the deal on 3 February 2021 it said the newsletter reached more than 1.5 million subscribers a day. Axios reported a price of about $27 million. HubSpot's annual report for 2022 later recorded a $17.2 million cash purchase price, net of cash acquired.
What HubSpot was buying was an audience of founders and operators it wanted as CRM customers, delivered through three properties: the newsletter, the Trends research subscription and the My First Million podcast. Three months later HubSpot launched the HubSpot Podcast Network with My First Million as one of its first shows, and Trends was eventually converted into a free HubSpot research property. Parr has since handed The Hustle and Trends over to HubSpot entirely and still co-hosts My First Million. The newsletter now signs off as "brought to you by HubSpot Media" and claims more than two million readers.
